Progress for Policing Reform: Police Chiefs Call for Drug Use Decriminalization

In an uncharacteristic shift, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police is calling for Members of Parliament to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of illegal drugs for personal consumption.


If federal lawmakers take action on this request, this could both alleviate discriminatory practices that harm marginalized communities the most and enable funding to be shifted from drug enforcement to health and social services. In particular, this could help the small minority of drug users that are suffering from addiction.
